ENGLISH BULLDOG BREED STANDARD

This modern, welfare-led standard preserves recognisable English Bulldog type while protecting health, soundness and function for future generations.

GENERAL APPEARANCE

The English Bulldog should be unmistakably a Bulldog: compact, powerful and substantial while remaining functional and athletic. Exaggeration must never be rewarded at the expense of health, comfort or function.

SIZE & PROPORTION

Approximately 14–15 inches maximum at the shoulder.

Weight approximately 25–35 kg as a guideline rather than a rigid requirement.

Dogs should be balanced and proportionate with a compact, square appearance, visible waist and abdominal tuck. Obesity must never be mistaken for substance.

HEAD & MUZZLE

A broad, characteristic Bulldog head without excessive exaggeration. There must be sufficient muzzle and unrestricted airways. Features should maintain recognisable Bulldog type without compromising breathing, vision or normal function.

MOUTH SHAPE
When viewed from the front with the mouth closed, the mouth should appear broad and form a rounded upside-down U shape (∩).

A narrow or pinched mouth that tapers into a V shape is undesirable.

The width of the mouth and jaw should complement the broad Bulldog head and muzzle, maintaining recognisable English Bulldog type without exaggeration.

NOSTRILS & BREATHING

Nostrils should be large and visibly open. Pinched or stenotic nostrils are undesirable.

Breathing and respiratory function must take priority over exaggerated facial features.

NOSE ROLL & SKIN

A nose roll is acceptable but must never cover or obstruct the nostrils.

Skin and wrinkles should not cause irritation or infection or interfere with normal function.

Loose skin and wrinkles are a characteristic part of English Bulldog breed type and should not be penalised simply for being present . Excessive skin that obstructs the eyes or nostrils , causes persistant irritation , or interferes with normal function is undesireable.

EYES

Healthy, clear eyes without excessive visible white. Facial construction and skin must not interfere with the eyes.

Eyes should be clear , healthy and well positioned , with little to no visible white when the dog is looking forward.

The eyelids should sit comfortably against the eye . Excessive facial skin or wrinkles must not interfere with normal vision or cause irritation .

Eyes should contribute to characteristic Bulldog expression without health or function being compromised.

EARS

Rose ears preferred.

FRONT CONSTRUCTION

The front should be broad, powerful and unmistakably Bulldog. The shoulders should be wide and well set, with the forelegs positioned towards the outside of the body, giving the characteristic appearance that the legs have been “pinned onto the sides” of the body.

Forelegs should be strong, substantial and well boned, supporting the broad chest and powerful forequarters. The front should remain balanced and functional without weakness or excessive distortion.

A narrow front that loses this characteristic English Bulldog shape is undesirable.

Feet should be compact and tight, with well-knit toes. Splayed or excessively flat feet are undesirable. A slight outward turn of the front feet may be accepted where the overall front remains balanced and functional, but should not be exaggerated. Feet turning inward are undesirable.

BODY & CONDITION

Muscular and substantial without excessive weight. The Bulldog should be well ribbed, with good depth and width through the chest and ribcage, while maintaining a visible waist and abdominal tuck.

When viewed from above, the body should be broad through the chest and ribcage before tapering naturally towards the waist and hindquarters. It should not appear straight-sided or excessively barrel-shaped throughout.

Loose skin is characteristic of the English Bulldog and should not be mistaken for excess body fat. A correctly conditioned Bulldog may carry loose skin and wrinkles while still displaying a clearly defined waist and healthy body condition.

Overall body length, height and width should remain balanced and proportionate, producing a compact, powerful Bulldog without exaggeration compromising movement or function.

MOVEMENT

COLOUR — ALL COLOURS ACCEPTED

Colour alone must never determine quality.

A Bulldog of any colour must still demonstrate correct English Bulldog breed type.

Health, temperament, structure and function take priority over colour.

Sound, purposeful and functional movement with reach in front and drive from behind.

Dogs whose exaggerated construction significantly restricts normal movement should not be rewarded.

Movement should be free and purposeful, with the dog able to move comfortably and without obvious restriction. The front should show appropriate reach while the strong hindquarters provide drive from behind.

The dog should remain balanced while moving, without excessive rolling, crossing, weakness or instability. Characteristic Bulldog movement is acceptable, but exaggeration that compromises soundness or function should not be rewarded.

REAR CONSTRUCTION

The hindquarters should be strong and muscular, with well-developed thighs providing power and drive.

The rear should be narrower than the front, as is characteristic of the English Bulldog, but there should still be a clear, visible gap between the hind legs when viewed from behind.

Hocks should be strong and stable, allowing the dog to stand and move soundly. The rear should not appear weak, excessively narrow, cow-hocked or unstable.

The hindquarters should provide effective drive and remain in balance with the heavier, broader forequarters.

Short corkscrew and very short straight tails are acceptable. The tail should be naturally formed, healthy and mobile.

The exact shape of the tail is less important than its health and function. It should not be so tight or inverted that it creates a deep tail pocket, chronic irritation, infection or discomfort.

A healthy, functional tail should never be penalised simply because one acceptable tail type is preferred over another.

TEMPERAMENT

Confident, steady, sociable and dependable. Sound temperament is an essential component of the breed.

TAIL

“Breed type should never come at the expense of health. The Bulldog of the future should still be unmistakably a Bulldog — but it should be able to breathe freely, move soundly, see clearly and live an active, comfortable life.”

Bullbreeds United: Judging the Whole Dog

Bullbreeds United judging looks at the whole Bulldog — breed type, structure, movement, breathing, eyes, skin, body condition, temperament, health and longevity. No single fashionable feature should ever outweigh overall soundness, welfare and long-term function.
